Women in Refrigeration: Inclusion and New Career Opportunities in the Refrigeration Industry

An international webinar promoted by AREA highlights the role of women in the refrigeration sector and initiatives to promote inclusion and career development.

The refrigeration and cooling sector is undergoing significant technological and regulatory evolution. In this context, the availability of qualified technicians and professionals is a key element in supporting the development of the HVAC&R industry.

The webinar "Women in Refrigeration – Empowering Inclusion in the Cooling Sector," organized by the European association AREA on the occasion of International Women's Day , focused on this very theme. The initiative brought together representatives of international organizations, industry associations, and professionals active in the refrigeration and heat pump fields with the aim of enhancing the contribution of women in the sector and promoting greater inclusion in a sector where the presence of women is still limited.

According to the organizers, encouraging greater female participation is not only a matter of equity but also a lever for strengthening the skills and innovation capacity of the entire sector.

International initiatives to promote inclusion in cooling

During the webinar, several international initiatives dedicated to capacity building and promoting inclusion in the refrigeration sector were presented. These include programs promoted by UNEP OzonAction , which supports numerous countries in implementing the Montreal Protocol and developing training programs for refrigeration technicians.

These activities include technical workshops, surveys, and initiatives aimed at identifying barriers that limit women's participation in the refrigeration supply chain, contributing to the development of national strategies to increase the presence of women in HVAC&R professions.

At the same time, awareness campaigns such as Women in Cooling , promoted in collaboration with World Refrigeration Day , aim to increase the visibility of female professionals already active in the sector, showing how women are present in numerous areas of refrigeration, even if often with less public representation.

Networking and mentorship for career development

One of the initiative's key focuses is the development of professional networks and mentoring programs . In this context, the work of the International Network of Women in Cooling (INWIC) , an international network connecting women working in the refrigeration, air conditioning, and heat pump sectors, was presented.

Through mentoring platforms and international networking initiatives, the organization fosters the exchange of experiences between professionals from different countries and supports career development in the technical sector. The goal is to create new professional opportunities and facilitate access to networks that are often crucial for growth in the industrial sector.

Experiences from the world of research and industry

The webinar also featured firsthand accounts from professionals working in research and industry. Among them, mechanical engineer Hannah Romberg of RWTH Aachen University presented her work on heat pump technologies and highly efficient energy systems.

Araceli Pino Ruiz, an electronics engineer at the Spanish company INTARCON, discussed her work developing control systems and validating refrigeration equipment to ensure the safety, reliability, and energy efficiency of the systems.

A clear message emerged from the various experiences. The cooling sector is expected to grow in the coming years and will require an ever-increasing number of qualified professionals. In this scenario, increasing the participation and visibility of women represents an important step towards strengthening skills, innovation, and sustainability across the entire refrigeration supply chain.
