Refrigerated counters in large-scale retail: the use of natural refrigerants is growing.

A national study reveals that 50% of refrigerants in large-scale retail refrigerated cabinets are natural: a step forward for sustainable refrigeration in Italy.

In the large-scale retail trade (GDO) sector, the transition towards low environmental impact refrigerants is accelerating.

According to the results of a recent national survey presented during Refrigera 2025, 50% of refrigerated cabinets use natural refrigerants , compared to a European average of 30%.

This result demonstrates the commitment of Italian companies to reducing their climate impact and anticipating regulatory requirements related to the fluorinated gas phase-out.

The survey analyzed nearly 4,000 refrigerated cabinets in 98 stores across six Italian regions. It found that natural solutions —such as CO₂ (R744), propane (R290), and ammonia (R717) —are now widespread in major hypermarkets and discount stores, while synthetic refrigerants remain prevalent in medium-sized supermarkets.

Energy efficiency and sustainability in commercial refrigeration

Attention to sustainability isn't limited to the choice of refrigerant: the design and management of refrigerated cabinets also play a key role in energy efficiency.

The study highlighted how closing refrigerated cabinets with transparent doors allows for energy savings of up to 58% , significantly reducing electricity consumption and CO₂ emissions.

In addition to the environmental benefit , closing the cabinets improves the conservation of products , ensuring greater freshness, reduced waste and a better shopping experience.

It is estimated that ten meters of enclosed counters can save up to 12 trees a year, transforming each store into a small "urban forest" in terms of positive impact.

Technology and manufacturing take center stage at Refrigera and Applitech 2025

On the same day, Refrigera 2025 hosted the PR Planet Refrigeration Awards ceremony, recognitions dedicated to technological innovation and sustainability in the refrigeration sector .

The awards highlighted the role of Italian companies in researching and developing more efficient and environmentally friendly solutions, reaffirming the centrality of Made in Italy in the cold chain.

In parallel, Applitech 2025 , a trade fair dedicated to the household appliances and consumer electronics industry, placed emphasis on the connection between manufacturing and innovation .

A cross-sector dialogue that demonstrates how Italian technology and subcontracting remain the foundation of industrial progress and international competitiveness.
