Kryon R290
Kryon® 290 (R-290) is high-purity, refrigeration-grade propane (grade 2.5–99.5%). It is a highly flammable (Class A3) natural refrigerant with an extremely low environmental impact, primarily used in 'plug-in' commercial refrigeration systems and other small-charge applications.
Description
Kryon® 290 (R-290) is propane used as a natural refrigerant in refrigeration systems. As a hydrocarbon composed solely of carbon and hydrogen, it has a minimal environmental impact: it does not deplete the ozone layer (ODP = 0) and has a very low global warming potential (GWP) compared to traditional HFCs/HFOs.
It is a highly flammable gas (safety class A3); therefore, it requires specific safety precautions during storage, handling, and system charging. Furthermore, the refrigerant charge in 'plug-in' systems is limited by regulations (typically up to approximately 150 g).
R-290 is primarily suitable for systems with small charges, such as refrigerated display cases, positive-temperature cold rooms, vending machines, and ice machines. The use of mineral oils in compressors can help manage solubility and moisture more effectively, avoiding issues associated with synthetic lubricants in hydrocarbon systems.
Technical features
